Description:

The current outbreak of 2019 novel Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has the potential to evolve into a global pandemic. Molecular testing laboratories are fielding questions daily and clinical laboratory professionals are attempting to navigate questions about the virus as well as demands for diagnostic testing.

This AMP “Horizons in Molecular Pathology” webinar, sponsored and planned by the AMP Training and Education Committee, will address the laboratory and clinical considerations for the COVID-19 outbreak. Dr. Capraro will begin with an up-to-date overview of the biological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 as well as current epidemiology. The status of laboratory testing, including the use of commercial assays, will also be discussed. Dr. Versalovic will present, from the perspective of a Laboratory Director, information on criteria for testing, navigating regulatory issues, and coordinating testing and care with laboratory personnel, the clinical team, and external stakeholders (e.g., the CDC and local public health departments). Dr. Graf will summarize and moderate a question and answer session.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 biology and infection.
  • Discuss current epidemiological data on the COVID-19 outbreak.
  • Describe laboratory considerations for COVID-19 testing and reporting.
